Some symptoms go unmentioned for months simply because a woman can't find the English words, or because describing a burning sensation or an irregular period through an interpreter feels awkward. When the conversation happens in Spanish, that barrier is gone and the visit accomplishes far more.

Before you come: jot down three things
A few minutes at home keep you from forgetting details once you're on the exam table:
- When your most recent period started and whether it usually shows up on a predictable schedule.
- What you're feeling and since when: discharge that changed color, itching, pain during sex, bleeding between periods.
- Any medicines you take, including birth control pills, vitamins or home remedies.
If you have results from a previous Pap test, bring them or snap a photo on your phone.
Plain words are enough
You don't need medical vocabulary. Saying "something smells off down there," "I feel a lump in my breast" or "I want to stop using the shot" gives the medical team what it needs to ask the right follow-up questions. What you share stays between you and the staff caring for you.
What can be checked during the visit
- Pap smear and vaginal cultures to look for cervical changes or the cause of an infection.
- Treatment for vaginal infections when the exam confirms one.
- Birth control guidance: pills, the injection or long-acting options.
- Ultrasound when the medical team needs a closer look inside.
If it's your first time
Ask to have each step explained before it starts and raise any question you have; you're also welcome to bring someone you trust. You may stop the exam at any point.
