Types of ultrasound we perform

• Abdominal: liver, gallbladder (stones), pancreas, spleen and kidneys; useful for abdominal pain, nausea after meals or abnormal liver tests
• Kidney and urinary tract: stones, dilation or recurring infections
• Pelvic: uterus and ovaries; cysts, fibroids, irregular bleeding or pelvic pain
• Obstetric: pregnancy confirmation, heartbeat, gestational age and follow-up
• Thyroid: nodules or neck swelling, complementing the thyroid panel
• Soft tissue: lumps, masses or abscesses to decide on treatment

How to prepare

• Abdominal ultrasound: fast 6 to 8 hours so the gallbladder shows clearly; water is fine
• Pelvic or early-pregnancy ultrasound: full bladder; drink 3 or 4 glasses of water one hour before and do not urinate
• Thyroid and soft tissue: no preparation
• Wear comfortable two-piece clothing so only the area being examined is uncovered

The exam takes 15 to 30 minutes. A cool gel is applied to the skin and the probe glides over it; it does not hurt and uses no radiation, so it can be repeated as often as needed and is safe during pregnancy.

Pregnancy ultrasound

From about the sixth week the gestational sac is usually visible, and the heartbeat shortly after. Measuring the embryo lets us calculate the weeks and the due date. If you just had a positive pregnancy test, an ultrasound is the next step to confirm everything is going well. We also do follow-up ultrasounds during pregnancy. You are welcome to bring someone with you and, if you wish, we give you printed images. An ultrasound does not replace full prenatal care; we help you get it started.

Results during the same visit

The physician interprets the study on the spot, shows you the images and gives you a written report. If the finding requires a specialist, we provide the referral with the report and images so you do not have to repeat the exam. If you bring previous ultrasounds, we compare them.
