Flu & COVID Testing and Respiratory Illness Care
Influenza (flu) and COVID detection testing, plus treatment of flu, cough and respiratory illnesses.
- Rapid flu and COVID testing
- Same-day diagnosis
- Treatment of flu, cough and bronchitis
- Walk-in care in Spanish
Fever, body aches, cough and a sore throat can be influenza, COVID, a bad cold or bronchitis, and each is treated differently. At Clínica Hispana Nueva Salud La Porte we run the rapid tests and give you the diagnosis and treatment during the same visit, no appointment needed, in Spanish or English and on weekends too.
Rapid flu and COVID tests
A nasal swab gives us the result for influenza A and B and for COVID-19 in about 15 minutes. The best time to test is within the first 2 to 3 days of symptoms, when the test is most accurate and antivirals still work. If your employer or your children's school needs proof of the result, we give it to you in writing.
If a sore throat is the main symptom, with fever and no cough, we add a strep test to find out whether you need an antibiotic.
What we treat
- Influenza: antivirals when you are within the first 48 hours or in a risk group, plus fever and cough control
- COVID-19: oxygen-level check, symptom treatment and, for at-risk patients, guidance on antivirals
- Common cold and sinusitis
- Acute bronchitis with a lingering cough
- Pharyngitis and tonsillitis
- Asthma or respiratory allergy flare-ups that get mistaken for infection
Antibiotics do not work on viruses. We prescribe them only when the evaluation shows a bacterial infection, such as prolonged sinusitis, strep or early pneumonia, and you can fill them at our pharmacy.
When not to wait
Come the same day if you have a fever above 102 °F that will not come down, trouble breathing, chest pain, bluish lips, confusion, or if you have gone more than 10 days without improving. Also if the patient is a baby, an adult over 65, a pregnant woman or someone with diabetes, asthma, COPD or heart disease, because the flu gets complicated faster in them. If we detect signs of pneumonia or low oxygen, we refer you to the emergency room right away.
Recovering at home
Plenty of fluids, rest, acetaminophen or ibuprofen for fever and pain, honey for cough in children over one year, and a humid room at night. Stay home until you have gone 24 hours fever-free without medication; with COVID, wear a mask for the following days if you live with at-risk people. The best way to avoid the next episode is the flu vaccine every fall.
Work notes
If you need a note for the visit or for time off, we give it to you during the same visit with the dates indicated by the physician.
