Urinalysis & Urinary Infection Treatment

A urine test helps detect urinary infections and other conditions. At Clínica Hispana Nueva Salud La Porte we run the test and, if there's an infection, we start treatment the same day.

How to tell if it is a urinary infection

Burning or pain when urinating, needing to go all the time even if little comes out, urgency that does not give you time to get there, cloudy, foul-smelling or bloody urine, and pressure or pain in the lower belly. In women it is very common after sex, during pregnancy and in menopause; in men it is less common and usually related to the prostate. If you also have fever, chills, nausea or pain in your back at waist level, the infection may have reached the kidneys and you need care that same day.

What we do during the visit

1. You provide a urine sample at the clinic; we explain how to collect it midstream so it is not contaminated
2. We run the urinalysis with a test strip and microscope, with results in 15 minutes: white cells, nitrites, blood, protein and glucose
3. If the infection is recurrent, does not improve with antibiotics or you are a man, we send a urine culture that identifies the bacterium and the exact antibiotic it responds to, in 2 to 3 days
4. The physician reviews your symptoms and history, and if there is an infection you start the antibiotic during that same visit, available at our pharmacy

The urine test also detects other things: glucose (which may indicate diabetes), protein (kidney), blood (stones) or ketones, and is used for general checkups and for pregnancy testing.

Treatment and relief

Most bladder infections in women clear with 3 to 5 days of antibiotics; men and upper infections need longer courses. Burning improves in 24 to 48 hours; in the meantime, drinking plenty of water, avoiding coffee and alcohol, and a pain reliever if needed all help. Finish the full course even if you already feel well. If there is no improvement in 3 days, come back: the bacterium may be resistant and the culture will tell us what to change.

When it is not an infection

Burning with discharge, especially with a new partner, may be a sexually transmitted infection; itching and thick discharge in women point to a vaginal infection. That is why we assess the full picture and not just the urine strip.

Recurring infections

If you have 3 or more infections a year, we look for the cause: sex, low water intake, holding urine, uncontrolled diabetes, menopause or kidney stones. Depending on the case we recommend preventive measures, a kidney ultrasound or a glucose check. In men with recurring infections we examine the prostate.
