Men's Health Exams: PSA & Testosterone

Most of the men we see in La Porte have gone years without a checkup: they work long shifts at the plants, the port or in construction, and only see a doctor when something hurts. At Clínica Hispana Nueva Salud La Porte we do men's health exams in a single visit, with no appointment, results explained in Spanish or English, and no insurance needed.

Testosterone

Testosterone declines gradually after 30, but when it drops below normal you get constant fatigue, less sex drive, trouble with erections, loss of muscle mass, more belly fat, irritability or low mood. The test is a blood draw best done between 8 and 10 in the morning, when the level is highest; if it is low, it is repeated on another day to confirm before discussing treatment. Obesity, diabetes, sleep apnea and alcohol lower testosterone, so we always check those causes first.

Prostate-specific antigen (PSA)

PSA is a prostate protein that rises with age, with inflammation, with benign enlargement and, in some cases, with cancer. It is recommended to discuss the test from age 50, or from 45 if your father or brother had prostate cancer. Avoid ejaculation, cycling and intense exercise for 48 hours before, because they raise the result. A high PSA does not mean cancer: the physician interprets it based on your age, prostate size and previous values, and if needed refers you to a urologist with everything documented.

Urinary symptoms

Getting up several times a night to urinate, a weak stream, dribbling at the end or feeling that the bladder does not empty are typical of benign prostate enlargement after 50. With a urine test we rule out infection, with PSA and an exam we assess the prostate and, if appropriate, start treatment that improves the stream within a few weeks. Burning or discharge from the urethra calls for STD testing.

General men's checkup

We use the visit to cover what kills Hispanic men most and almost never causes symptoms: blood pressure, glucose and A1C, cholesterol and triglycerides, kidney and liver function, and weight and waist circumference. If there is high blood pressure, palpitations or a family history of heart attack, we add an electrocardiogram. The complete general checkup for $99 includes blood work, A1C, urine test and consultation.

How to prepare

Come between 9 and 10 in the morning after 8 hours of fasting if you want everything in a single draw: testosterone, PSA, glucose and lipids. Water is fine. Bring your medication list and previous results if you have them. The visit is private and you can talk to the physician about erectile dysfunction, premature ejaculation or anything else without anyone else knowing.
