Urine test or blood test

The urine test gives a result in minutes and is reliable from the first day of a missed period; it works best with the first urine of the morning, when the hormone is most concentrated. The blood test (quantitative hCG) detects pregnancy earlier, 7 to 10 days after conception, and also measures the exact hormone level, which is useful for following a very early pregnancy or when there is worrying pain or bleeding. The physician recommends the right one for your situation and how many days late you are.

Confirmation with ultrasound

If the test is positive, from the sixth week an ultrasound shows the gestational sac, lets you hear the heartbeat and calculates your due date. We do it in the same clinic, no need to go anywhere else.

If the result is positive

• We calculate how many weeks along you are and your due date
• We explain the basics for a healthy start: folic acid, prenatal vitamins, which foods and medications to avoid
• We can run the initial blood work: blood type and Rh, hemoglobin, glucose and infection screening
• We guide you on prenatal-care options in the area and provide any referral you need

If the result is negative

A late period is not always pregnancy. Stress, weight changes, thyroid problems, polycystic ovaries or switching contraceptives can also disrupt your cycle. If your period does not arrive within a week, we repeat the test; if delays keep happening, we evaluate them in a gynecology visit. And if you are not trying to get pregnant, we can go over the birth control option that works best for you.
