Pap smear: when and how

A Pap smear detects changes in the cervix before they turn into cancer. It is recommended from age 21 to 65, every 3 years if the result is normal, or every 5 years when combined with HPV testing after 30. If you have never had one or it has been years, that is fine: what matters is starting today.

The test takes less than 10 minutes. For a reliable result, avoid intercourse, douching, vaginal suppositories and creams for the 48 hours before, and try not to come on heavy bleeding days. Results take 1 to 2 weeks; if something is abnormal, we explain it calmly and arrange follow-up or a colposcopy referral.

Vaginal infections: culture and treatment

Itching, burning, discharge with an unusual color or odor, or discomfort during sex are usually caused by yeast (candidiasis), bacterial vaginosis or trichomoniasis. Each is treated differently, and using over-the-counter suppositories again and again without knowing which one you have is why many infections keep coming back. A culture identifies the cause, and in most cases you start treatment the same day.

Our women's intimate health promotion for $69 includes the culture, a medical consultation and a urine test. If the main symptom is burning when urinating, it may be a urinary tract infection, and if there was a risky encounter it is worth adding STD testing.

What the visit is like

You are seen in a private exam room with the door closed, and the physician explains each step before doing it. You are welcome to bring someone with you. Bring the date of your last period, the list of medications or contraceptives you use and, if you have previous Pap smears or studies, bring them for comparison. Wear comfortable clothing.
