Allergy Testing & Treatment

Evaluation and treatment of seasonal, respiratory and skin allergies, with care in Spanish.

  • Evaluation of symptoms and triggers
  • Treatment of respiratory and skin allergies
  • Management of rhinitis and congestion
  • Care in Spanish

Allergies never let up in the La Porte area: oak and cedar pollen in winter and spring, grass in summer, ragweed in fall, and humidity and mold all year long. At Clínica Hispana Nueva Salud La Porte we identify what is affecting you and give you treatment that lets you breathe and sleep well, in Spanish or English and with no appointment.

Respiratory allergies

Sneezing fits, a runny or stuffy nose, itchy eyes and palate, red watery eyes, and that feeling of having a cold for weeks without a fever. Allergic rhinitis also causes headaches, snoring and tiredness from poor sleep. When the inflammation moves down to the chest you get a dry cough, wheezing and shortness of breath, especially at night or with exercise; in that case we evaluate for asthma and treat both.

Skin allergies

Hives that come and go, itchy dry dermatitis in skin folds, reactions to detergents, jewelry or plants, and insect bites that swell more than normal. We examine your skin, look for the trigger and give you treatment to stop the itching from day one.

How we make the diagnosis

Most allergies are identified with a good history: what time of year they get worse, whether they are worse at home or at work, whether there are pets, carpets or dampness, and what you have tried. When needed, we add blood work to measure IgE and detect the most common allergens. If a respiratory symptom comes with fever, we first rule out flu, COVID or an infection, because the treatment is different.

Treatment

  • Newer-generation antihistamines that do not cause drowsiness
  • Steroid nasal spray for persistent congestion, the most effective treatment for rhinitis
  • Eye drops for itchy eyes
  • Inhalers when there is cough or wheezing
  • Creams and antihistamines for the skin; for severe flare-ups, an injection that brings relief in minutes
  • Everything can be filled at our pharmacy

We explain which ones to use daily during the season and which only when symptoms appear, so you do not spend on medication you do not need.

Reducing flare-ups at home

Keep windows closed on high-pollen days, shower and change clothes when you get home from work, wash sheets in hot water weekly, use a dehumidifier if there is mold and keep pets out of the bedroom. With these changes plus the right treatment, most patients notice the difference within one or two weeks.

When it is an emergency

Swelling of the lips, tongue or throat, trouble breathing or dizziness after eating something or after a sting are signs of a severe reaction: call 911. After an episode like that, come see us so we can set up a plan and an epinephrine auto-injector if you need one.
