Flu and Tetanus (Tdap) Vaccines

At Clínica Hispana Nueva Salud La Porte we give the influenza vaccine and tetanus toxoid with no appointment, in Spanish or English and at a flat price. You walk in, we check you in a few minutes and you leave protected, with a vaccination record if you need one for work or school.

Influenza (flu) vaccine

In the Houston area, flu season usually starts in October and peaks between December and February. The best time to get vaccinated is September or October, but the shot is still worthwhile through spring. Your body takes about two weeks to build protection, and the vaccine is updated every year for the strains in circulation, which is why it has to be repeated annually.

It is recommended from 6 months of age and is especially important for:

• Adults over 65
• Pregnant women
• People living with diabetes, asthma, COPD or heart disease
• Anyone caring for babies or older adults at home
• Plant, refinery, port, school, restaurant and retail workers, who are in contact with many people every day

Tetanus toxoid and Tdap

A tetanus booster is recommended every 10 years. If you cut yourself on rusty metal, a nail or a dirty tool, or were bitten, and more than 5 years have passed since your last dose, you should get the booster within the first 48 hours. The Tdap vaccine also protects against diphtheria and whooping cough, and is recommended during every pregnancy between weeks 27 and 36, as well as for anyone who will care for a newborn.

If we are already treating your wound at the clinic, whether with stitches or wound care, we check your vaccination status during that same visit.

What the visit is like

• A few quick questions: allergies, current fever, pregnancy, reactions to previous vaccines
• Injection in the arm by medical staff
• Ten to fifteen minutes of observation if it is your first time with that vaccine
• Vaccination record with date and lot number

The most common side effects are a sore arm, mild tiredness or a slight fever for a day or two. The flu vaccine contains no live virus, so it cannot give you the flu.

What to bring

An ID, your vaccination card if you have one, and your employer or school form if you need us to fill it out. Minors must come with a parent or legal guardian.
