Maybe you were just told you have type 2 diabetes, or you've lived with it for years and your numbers refuse to budge. Either way, this guide is for you. We put it together from the questions patients ask most often at our Spencer Highway office: what the lab results mean, what to change in the kitchen without giving up home cooking, and how often to come back for a checkup.

The lab results worth understanding

Getting diabetes under control starts with reading your results correctly. At a follow-up visit, the medical team looks at several values side by side:

  • Fasting glucose. Drawn in the morning before breakfast, it shows where your sugar stood on that particular day.
  • Hemoglobin A1c. It sums up how your sugar behaved over the previous two to three months, so it tells you whether the plan is working beyond one good or bad day.
  • Blood pressure, cholesterol and kidney function. Diabetes rarely shows up alone, and keeping an eye on these numbers protects the heart and kidneys.

Write down the numbers from each visit in a notebook or on your phone. Watching them drop over time is more motivating than any lecture.

Plate changes that actually last

Crash diets get dropped after two weeks. Small swaps the whole household can follow work better:

  1. Trade soda and sweetened agua fresca for plain water, sparkling water or unsweetened lemon water.
  2. Start the meal with vegetables and protein (beans, chicken, fish, eggs) and save a smaller portion of tortilla, rice or bread for last.
  3. Read the labels: plenty of "light" or oatmeal products hide more sugar than they let on.
  4. If your shift means a late dinner, make that the lightest meal of your day.

Moving at your own pace

You don't have to pay for a gym. A short walk after eating, even ten or fifteen minutes, helps your body put sugar to better use. Sylvan Beach park works just as well as your own block. Before anything more demanding, bring it up at your visit, especially if you take insulin or have trouble with your feet.

Warning signs you shouldn't brush off

Book a visit soon if you notice unusual thirst or a frequent urge to urinate, blurry vision, foot sores that won't close, or tingling in your hands and feet. Catching a complication early lets the treatment be adjusted before it progresses. If someone faints, becomes confused or can't catch their breath, don't wait: dial 911.
